Pembroke Lunch Club is a fun and relaxed space for local people to come together and have a good time. A mouth-watering lunch is prepared by a chef and a team of volunteers, who labour with love and some hilarity to cook, serve and wash-up.
Lunch is served on or after 12:30, and we ask for a contribution of just £3 per person for those who can afford it. While we eat we exchange ideas, listen and laugh. Our gatherings are spiced up by a number of visitors, some of them passing through, some of them here for a bit longer. Lunch is followed by bingo for those who wish, or a user-led knitting group. A small but vocal minority of our regulars hate bingo, and leave before it begins. Everyone else rolls up their sleeves and sweats away.
The Pembroke Lunch Club was launched in January 2010 and has been going strong with a good core of regulars since then. Around ten volunteers help each week, along with a project manager and an experienced chef.
The Lunch Club aims to provide a relaxed and sociable space for mature Walworth residents to gather, helping to reduce social isolation. Healthy living has become a particular focus in the work of Pembroke House in 2010 and Lunch Club aims to support this. So each week our lunches combine healthy and fresh ingredients, bought locally, to produce a meal that is both delicious and nutritious. All the food is prepared on-site, in our professional kitchen.
What goes on?
Lunch Club users can turn up for some Dancersize from 12:15. Around 1pm our freshly made lunch is served in the main hall, catering for 50 people, accompanied by popular music from the 30s, 40s and 50s. This relaxed and comfortable setting provides the perfect opportunity for friends to catch up and new friendships to meet one another.
How to get involved
The Lunch Club is open to anyone over 50 living in Walworth, so just come along on Thursdays from 12:15. No need to book. Cost is just £3.00 for each session – which includes dinner, dessert and drinks.
