Migrateful is a cookery and language initiative where asylum seekers, refugees and migrants struggling to access employment in the UK due to legal and linguistic barriers, teach their traditional cuisines to the public.
The Migrateful chefs are invited to attend a chef training session every Wednesday from 10am – 13:30 at Pembroke House (SE17 1QR). This session involves 90 minutes of English tuition combined with cookery class training and in the second half the chefs take it in turns to teach each other their cuisines in an informal, fun setting. This group offers them an important support network and a chance to share feelings and food in a safe group environment. They get to enjoy a delicious meal and Migrateful covers their travel costs. Migrateful currently have chefs from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Congo, Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Cuba and Ecuador. When they feel ready, they are invited to teach a cookery class to paying customers in the evening.
